The Falcons for the last four seasons have been a power running team that sets up the pass with the run. That was under Mike Mularkey. Michael Turner has enjoyed double digit TDs for 4 straight seasons as the workhorse RB. Times are changing. New OC Dirk Koetter is ready to open this thing up and start throwing the rock.
It’s no surprise that Matt Ryan has looked good this preseason with a cupboard full of weapons. So where does the plodding Michael Turner fit in? It looks more and more likely that he may leave the field in order for the Falcons to get Jacquizz Rodgers more involved in the offense. The coaching staff has already mentioned that Rodgers could be an every down back and he hasn’t disappointed.
The Falcons base offense will be a 3-WR set with Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Harry Douglas. There should be running lanes the size of a semi to run through, but Turner has looked sluggish in limited action. I know it’s only preseason and I try not to overreact, but 3 carries for -3 yards is not going to get it done, despite the fact the he caught 3 passes for 14 yards.
I think the gap between these RBs is closing, especially in PPR leagues, but Turner should still be the man at the goaline, for now. Originally I had pegged Turner as a undervalued RB early in the Summer, but he is now looking a player to possibly stay away from in drafts if he doesn’t show more in the upcoming weeks. Keep Rodgers on you radar as a possible late round value pick with upside.
