Fantasy Profile: Tony Gonzalez

I’m still a slam dunk Juan…barely

2012 Recap:  Many thought that Tony Gonzalez would be solid, yet unspectacular in 2012, but far from a upside play that we all crave.  Those people that took a chance on Gonzo were rewarded with the 3rd best fantasy TE, with 8.8 FPG.  He finished with 93 rec for 930 yards and 8 TDs.  Unbelievably enough Tongy G ended up with a spectacular 76.2% catch rate as well.  Obviously his ability to get down field lacked with only a 10.0 yard per catch, but who cares when he was able to produce the way he did .  Once again, Gonzo played in every game and hasn’t missed a game since 2006.  Oh, and he is still married to October Gonzalez.

What’s Changed:  Tony thought long and hard (that’s what she said) about retirement, but decided to come back at age 37 and fantasy owners couldn’t be happier.  With the fallout of the tight end position this season Gonzo is easily the #2 guy behind only Jimmy James Graham.  The Falcons OC Dirk Koetter claims he wants balance in the offense, but this is a passing offense (60% of the time).  Now, last season the Falcons had cyder block footed Michael Turner as their feature back and Jacquizz Rodgers failed to do much of anything that was memorable.  Enter Steven Jackson who will be a major upgrade at RB and could take some short targets away, but Jackson’s presence could allow for some nice play action in the red zone.

Outlook:  As stated above, the TE position is in major flux this season and Gonzo is as steady as it gets.  The Falcons offense is explosive and dynamic and Tony G owns the middle of the field.  He may not repeat the amount of receptions or yards, but I’m not worries about him finishing as a top 3 TE again.  He may not be the value he was in 2012, but he will be given every chance to come close to his 2012 numbers.  Not the flashiest pick, but one of the more solid ones.
