Maurice Jones-Drew has folded. Now, what do we do with him in fantasy leagues? Since many leagues have already drafted MJD has probably fallen because of the holdout. It’s hard to even say when Jones-Drew will play. The Jaguars have a roster exemption, so they can wait to release a player until MJD actually plays.
This could be week 2 and if all indications are true Rashad Jennings will start week one and handle the majority of the carries. What if Jennings goes out and rushes for 100 yards and 2 TDs? This will muddle the situation even more and we may see a full blown RBBC. Remember that the Jags may choose to ease him back as he missed the entire offseason.
Here are some other notable holdouts and the rush yardage difference the following season:
Emitt Smith: -227
Steven Jackson: +20
Larry Johnson: -1,230
Chris Johnson: -317
The fact that MJD had 343 carries last season and has led the NFL in carries over the past 3 seasons warrants even further attention. But despite these worries, it’s time to move him up in the rankings now from 18 to 10. Even with question marks about his football shape and possible split, he is still a safer option than AP and Charles.
MJD is still one of the most talented RBs in the NFL and may be able to overcome the lack of offseason and the threat of Jennings. I think you can safely grab him in the 2nd round and you may get first round value in return.
